A Closer Look: KCBY Short Film Crew (Group 17)

It all started in the summer when seniors Mason Adams and Josh Brunelli had the idea to start a short film crew for KCBY.

“Mrs. K was excited about the idea and we brainstormed some ideas and slowly created a crew, “said Adams.

As the school year started, the self- proclaimed crew brainstormed ideas for films, as they are required to create one film per six weeks. So far, the crew has created a total of two films, one of which is titled,“The Mammoth Affray” and the other titled, “The Bathroom Heist”. Both films will be entered into film festivals like STN and Sundance for a chance to win awards and gain recognition.

“A cool thing we are doing this year with the short film crew is partnering up with the EMAC academy and having a Short Film Showcase to show off some of our work along with the school’s film creations. It should be a fun time for everyone,” Brunelli revealed. “As the lead teacher, I was thrilled with the work that students produced during last year’s short film showcase,” said Irma Kennedy.

This leaded Kennedy to the idea of having a school wide film festival.

Kennedy says, “It’s always been in the back of my mind to have a short film festival. I decided to open it up to everyone in the school because of popular demand”.

While prospective EMAC students from Coppell Middle School West toured the school, Kennedy found out that middle school students were also passionate about short films.

“We can include a middle school division too!” Kennedy exclaimed.

KCBY had always had a short film crew until the past couple years because the passion for short film dwindled.

“It’s really up to the students if we have a crew. If they aren’t passionate about it, then it won’t happen not matter how enthusiastic I am”.

However, Kennedy says that she has a “great group of seniors who are resurrecting the short film crew. I look forward to seeing next year’s seniors to continue the creativity. We have great communication this year and I hope that also continues”.
