In the month of November, Coppell High School English Clara Caussey assigned the most anticipated project of the year to her Academy English II classes. This is the first STEM based project of the year.
The assignment includes creating models that represent different aspects of order and design. For example, a student would make a model explaining the order and design of a song that looks like music notes.
“I think the project is really cool because I finally have a project that relates to my specific academy,” sophomore Phillip Sowders said.
In the second month of her classes working on it, the students are still uncovering different aspects of the project such as what they need for the project and other information.
“It teaches us how to find order and design in our daily lives,” Public Service Academy sophomore Aleesha Johnson said. She then explained that it is helpful to have that ability to
The students have the choice to either work with a partner or by themselves to complete this project by the middle of January. Some students think the due date to be very intimidating.
“I’m a little nervous about being able to finish since the project is so large, but I’ve been working really hard to make it the best It can be,” Johnson said.
Students so far enjoy the project. There are multiple aspects you could take. Since all of the academies have to do this project, each student’s will be different. Emerging Media and Communications (EMAC) and the PSA academy are trying to tackle a STEM related project. The two academies are taking different tolls to try to keep it within their academy.
“Most of our projects this year have been more geared towards my academy or the EMAC academy, but this is the first one related to STEM and it’s a lot more difficult than I thought,”Sowders said.
Each unit, Caussey tries to relate their current lesson to a different academy. She hopes that each one will be a success and that the students enjoy relating things to the other academies they are not involved in.
“It is really interesting to relate it to STEM, I didn’t really know much about that academy, so I had to learn what they did each day,” Johnson said.
The project is hoped to be a success with all students. To see the final products, check back in January.
“I can’t wait for my product to be finished, I think it’ll be great,” Sowders said.
